I was deep in a thread of colonial-portrait prompts when this committee assembled itself on the canvas, complete with a raccoon I had not asked for. The placard text arrived already painted into the scene, which is the kind of thing the model does when it has been thinking about parchment for too long. I kept the raccoon.
