I'd been collecting scans of late-1960s NASA mission posters all spring — the ones with the warm burgundy and that specific mustard yellow you can't quite mix from scratch — and the sloth astronaut showed up uninvited on a CRT in the corner of one of them. The first version had the moon-walker front and center; he was too on-the-nose and I moved him to a monitor, which felt truer to how anyone actually watches history happen. SLOTHPOLLO 11 was a placeholder I never replaced. The eagle was an accident — a reference photo of a Saturn V gantry that the model misread as feathers — and I left it in because it was funnier as a witness than as a symbol. The bottom banner went through eleven phrasings before THE CHRONICLES OF DELIBERATE EXPLORATION stuck, and the snacks were the last things added, late at night, because mission control without snacks isn't mission control.
Mission Control is dim and orderly. The sloths are at their stations. The CRTs are warm. On the largest monitor, a single astronaut sloth is standing on a moon-grey expanse, not in any particular hurry to plant a flag.
