The Knowing Tree

There is a face in the tree and it knows things.

Three eyes, two of them with spirals where the pupils should be. He has been here a long time. He's not going anywhere. He's not telling.

On the mushroom-cap above him, a smaller sloth is drinking tea and meditating, like a much younger version of the same idea. An octopus is curled nearby — we don't know how an octopus got into the forest either, but it seems important. A seal is doing what seals do. A goat is playing chess against an owl, and the owl is reading from a scroll, which is either cheating or a different game entirely.

Two capybaras with wild red manes flank the great face. They stare at him. He stares back, or past them, or maybe at you — it's hard to say from this angle. A turtle, a giraffe, an elephant, a snail, and ferns all the ferns. At the roots: a pool with a capybara wading, another octopus paying him no mind, and gears at the bottom of the water that nobody mentions and nobody removes.

If you've collected our Tree of Life, this is the same forest a thousand years on. Same world, older. The face in the bark is what the tree learned to do while no one was watching.
